UNC Zero Waste Event: Beauty Through Toxicity by Denise Hughes

April 21 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

As part of the Three Zeros Initiative’s Zero Waste to Landfill goal, we are inviting Denise Hughes, a local artist, to campus. Denise creates large murals by upcycling plastic bottle caps and other discarded plastic. An exhibit of her work will be hung in the Student Union Art Gallery from March 15th to April 26th. This event is for the gallery opening for the exhibit, which will be held April 21 in the Union Art Gallery, complete with local, sustainable refreshments and a chance to hear the artist speak about her work. Staff from the Sustainability Office and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling will also be there to inform students on UNC’s efforts to reduce waste on campus and ways that members of campus can get involved. This event is also cosponsored by the Environmental Affairs Committee of Student Government. To find out more about the artist and her work, visit: http://denisehughes.com/plastics/

Launched in fall 2016, Three Zeros is Carolina’s integrated approach to reducing its environmental footprint through three sustainability goals: net zero water usage; zero waste to landfills; and net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Implementing the Three Zeros goals will improve operational and budgetary efficiency and will create a living-learning laboratory for students, faculty and staff to study and advance the most recent developments in sustainability policy and technology. Three Zeros includes everything from individual behaviors to world-changing research and collaborations.
