From November, 2007 through February, 2008, UNC and NC State competed in a water conservation competition. Student from both universities combined to conserve more than 11 million gallons of water during the close competition!

Challenge yourself to use less water with these helpful tips:

> Time your shower to keep it under 5 minutes.
> Turn off water while shampooing, shaving and brushing your teeth.
> Collect bath/shower water while it heats up and reuse for watering plants.
> Do not leave water running while washing dishes.
> When doing laundry, fill the washing machine to capacity.
> Wear clothes longer than normal to cut down on laundry.
> Use dry clean-up methods whenever possible.
> Report plumbing leaks on campus to Facilities Services

 Water Use and Management Minimize

Limited local water supplies and recent droughts have highlighted the need to reduce water consumption across campus.

Carolina is continually increasing water use efficiency with technology upgrades such as waterfree urinals and low-flow fixtures, and has further reduced water consumption with behavioral changes.

On a larger scale, the University is partnering with Orange County Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA) to install a water reclamation and reuse system which will reduce water demand in Chapel Hill by 10%.

Carolina also manages stormwater, water from storms that is not absorbed and turns into runoff. The University has developed a comprehensive Stormwater Management Plan and has incorporated stormwater mitigation technologies such as green roofs and porous pavement in construction projects throughout campus.
