With the help of Durham recycle artist Bryant Holsenbeck, campus and community members have created a large mandala on the floor of the FedEx Global Education Center Peacock Atrium. Made from bottle caps and other items collected by the Global Cup Café (housed within the Global Education Center) and the artist, the mandala is a large, visible representation of items recycled and those destined for the landfill. Also on display is window art made by UNC students out of recycled materials. These students collected items during their service and research projects abroad and have turned them into pieces of art.

Expected to be the first public building in North Carolina securing the highest level of certification for green architecture, the new Education Center for the North Carolina Botanical Garden opened on October 12, University Day. The Education Center, a new gateway to the garden’s nature trails and display gardens, was designed as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum building. The 29,656-square-foot center consists of three buildings connected by covered breezeways. All systems and materials have been designed to minimize environmental impact and support human health and include such technologies as photovoltaic panels, above- and below-ground rainwater cisterns, storm water retention ponds, geothermal heating and air-conditioning, natural day-lighting and low-flow plumbing. Construction materials were obtained from within a 500-mile radius, including lumber milled from the site. There are also many recycled components, such as steel beams made out of scrap metal from automobiles.

Chapel Hill Employs Goats
The Town of Chapel Hill has employed a small herd of goats to clear kudzu, poison ivy, vines, honeysuckle and other weeds from around the pond at Merritt Pasture and a second location at Southern Community Park. Landscape Superintendent Robert Minick said that goats are a good solution for weed abatement around very dense or sensitive landscapes such as the pasture in the Morgan Creek Preserve located south of Highway 15-501. And they can reach more difficult places such as steep hillsides and between rocks and under bridges. For more information about this project, please contact Robert Minnick at 919-969-5122 or Alix Bowman at 919-757-1850 or info@thegoatpatrol.com. See photos on Flickr.

Chancellor Thorp letter: Why UNC has (cling, clang, sss) steam heat
"The neighbors closest to our campus have been incredibly patient as Carolina has undertaken projects to improve our energy infrastructure, including repairs to the steam tunnel that connects our cogeneration facility on Cameron Avenue to the rest of the campus. At the university, we are well aware of how important steam and our cogeneration plant are to our operations, but I'm not sure if that knowledge extends beyond campus. So let me tell you the basics of how we generate energy at the UNC cogeneration facility and how we plan to do that even more sustainably in the future." Click here to continue reading.
