A growing range of initiatives, launched by students, faculty and staff from many departments, reflects the increasing institutionalization of sustainability at UNC. Efforts to make university operations more sustainable include constructing efficient and innovative buildings, increasing transportation options, reducing energy and water use, and using new techniques when caring for the grounds. Recognizing these initiatives, the State awarded the University the State Government Sustainability Award in 2005.
