In built areas throughout campus, the Grounds Department works to reduce runoff and erosion and improve infiltration.
Turf areas that had been difficult to maintain due to steep slopes, large shade trees, and high volumes of pedestrian traffic were replanted in spring 2002 with plants that are better at retaining water. Non-invasive groundcovers, ornamental grasses, shrubs, seasonal perennials and trees will help to hold both stormwater and soil in place and will be easier to maintain.
Additionally, a successional forest is being restored around the Smith Center.
