 Paper and Printing Minimize

Students use computers in the Undergraduate LibraryUNC students collaborated with the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling to implement a new paper procurement policy on campus.

The university now has 100%, and 50% recycled, non-chlorine bleached paper on contract and the default paper is 30% recycled. Additionally, remanufactured printer cartridges are available and their use is encouraged.

Academic Technology and Networks (ATN), which operates many of the computer labs on campus that offer printing to students, uses 100% recycled paper and has the default setting set to double-sided on all of it's printers. The Information Technology Services website contains statistics on the number of pages printed.

Default paper purchased by Administrative Information Systems (AIS), on state contract, and through UNC's online vendor (a total of over 35 million sheets annually) is a minimum of 30% recycled content paper. These groups list cost and not performance as the reason for not switching over to 100% recycled paper.

The default paper purchased by UNC Printing Services contains 20% recycled material, because paper with a higher recycled content causes their printers to jam. Paper with 50% and 100% recycled content is also available. 90-95% of the paper is chlorine free.
